Finally, Derrick Bird was boss [29/07 04:22PM]

THE CHEAP blue cotton curtains, unlined and ill-fitting, had been hastily drawn back. Littering the living room table that was wedged tightly against the window of Derrick Bird's home in Rowrah, Cumbria, lay a pile of letters.

Their contents were mostly indecipherable through the grimy pane save for the embossed letterheads printed in bold capitals. Some were stamped Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, others were bank statements.

But one, on the top, was from Derrick Bird's solicitor, Kevin Commons, confirming an appointment with his client, Bird, at 4pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 2.

Neither Bird, 52, nor his solicitor would keep that appointment. Neither would be alive.

Instead Bird, a somewhat introspective though mildmannered, balding and middle-aged man whose once athletic physique was now prone to paunch - unremark-able and instantly forgettable - would become infamous as a mass murderer.

Birdy, as he was known, would go on a killing spree, littering his native West Cumbria with 12 bloodied bodies.

In a sickening, premeditated bloodbath, the Cumbrian taxi driver would kill his twin brother, David; his genteel, courteous solicitor; and former and current work mates - blasting them with a pair of legally held firearms, aiming mostly for their faces - before racing through narrow winding lanes and hamlets firing indiscriminately from the window of his car as it sideswiped all in its way.

Some that he selected were ticked off his mental hit-list. Others - one a shy, retiring elderly spinster delivering catalogues; another a lone pensioner on his way to Ladbrokes to place a bet - would be random victims.

At the end of Birdy's murderous odyssey, when either he had exhausted his ammunition or sated his bloodlust, he would turn his gun upon himself taking his tally to 13 and becoming one of Britain's most prolific spree killers.

His motive may not yet be entirely clear. But those letters strewn across his table are telling clues that chart a decade-long brooding malice that would escalate into murderous rage.

Derrick and David were "chalk and cheese", according to those who knew them.

Derrick was born five minutes before his twin and, according to a primary schoolteacher, Nan Wilson, who taught both at Ehenside school, the siblings Replica Bulgari Watches were not close. "They didn't behave like some twins," she said. "Of the two, Derrick was quieter, he was always in his brother's shadow. Where David led, Derrick followed."

David Bird was a secondrow forward in the rugby team, while Derrick was poor at sport, failing to shine.

He was consumed by a gnawing grudge against his gregarious, more successful twin; fearful of a jail sentence over a spiralling tax bill; simmering with bitter resentment over imagined slights from past and present workmates who mocked his tawdry affairs with Thai prostitutes and cheapskate life; and tormented by paranoid perceptions that his twin and solicitor were conspiring to swindle him. They all had conspired to turn timid Bird into a festering bundle of unbridled fury.

Bird was seething over a loan of Pounds 25,000 his late father, Joe, had given his twin David before his death in 1998.

Joe Bird had made it clear in his will that the money should be deducted from any inheritance David might get; however, in the end, a
